Abstract
TZU CHI PROJECT HOPE: BHAKTAPUR CANCER HOSPITAL
Kathmandu, Nepal
2015
Project Hope is Buddhist Tzu Chi Foundation’s response to the devastating 8.1 magnitude earthquake that killed and displaced thousands of people in Kathmandu, Nepal in 2015. The project gives tremendous importance to education and health in alleviating poverty and restoring normalcy in heavily affected areas.
Specifically tapped to help rebuild Kathmandu, our firms are guided by these four design approaches: dynamic academic environment; holistic development; integrated, interactive, and highly walkable and bikeable community; and smart growth. Open spaces for recreation and disaster preparedness are incorporated. Each campus is pedestrian-oriented, with the buildings’ design reflecting Nepalese architecture. These schools are inclusive, welcoming students from across income classes and faith.
